Shocked Culture

India’s culture is among the world’s oldest civilization, began about 4500 years ago. It is not only old but very strong too. Our culture got the ability to absorb everything like a sponge in water.

It is a part of our culture to worship women power in form of Durga, Lakshmi, Kali but, we leave those sacred feelings behind in temples. When we come back home, it is a different situation in most households. Status of women is still considered inferior than men in the practical life. In this so called modern world, women are still tortured sometimes in the name of girl child education, female infanticide, domestic violence, dowry, rape to name a few. Traditionally, the dowry was considered a woman’s share of her family wealth. Since a daughter gets married and goes to groom’s family her share in her parent’s wealth was sent along g her. Later this got modified as forced practice, women started getting abused badly over this.

Our culture that worships or pretends to worship woman, is strong enough to sustain all this cruelty. Never gets shocked.

We boast a rich religious heritage too. Hindu, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs are supposed to be living in harmony. Throughout, India’s history, religion has been an important part of the country’s culture. We hardly witness any harmony among them, thousands of people got killed in communal violence over the years. Our shock proof culture can deal with all of this, and the story goes on.

Bottom line is there is nothing we can do that brings disgrace to our great culture. At least that’s what I used to think, but I was wrong as usual. There is one thing that is shaking “the unshakable” and that is -influence of western culture. Men and women are equally responsible for any cultural change, but the news is mostly about women wearing western outfits. Western influence is giving women voice. They are expressing themselves strongly than before.

Oh, I get it our culture is getting shocks because women have started to think and make their mark on this patriarchal society.
